5 DIY Mudroom Ideas for a Fashionable and Functional Entryway

Use These Mudroom Storage and Layout Ideas to Make a Grander Entrance

It’s easy to overlook your mudroom, even though it’s the first and last room you walk through on your way in and out. The name doesn’t really help either. After all, why invest time and energy in a space that is literally there to keep mud off your floors?

Despite its uninspiring purpose, your mudroom can easily become one of the most stylish and functional rooms in your home. Use these DIY mudroom storage and layout ideas to liven up your entryway and keep your family organized during the morning rush out the door.

1. Add Mudroom Storage Space With Custom Cubbies

After waking up to a pile of clutter in her mudroom every morning, Emily Fish of Domestic Deadline decided to build her own custom cubbies to suit her family’s needs. This idea is especially great for small mudroom entryways, offering kids a tidy place to keep their coats, shoes and other accessories.

Her design features shelving for bins and drawers, as well as hooks in each cubby for backpacks, coats and other essentials. The list of supplies is only ten items long, and the instructions are very easy to follow. Check out the full how-to at Domestic Deadline.

2. Repurpose Furniture Into DIY Mudroom Storage

If you have an extra bookcase or dresser, consider using it for a little additional storage in your mudroom. There are a variety of how-tos floating around the internet showing clever ways to turn your old furniture into a useful part of your mudroom or laundry area layout. This particular tutorial from the DIY Network shows you how to add name plates to an old dresser so each member of your family has their own drawer.

If you have a few IKEA pieces lying around, check out some of the DIY mudroom ideas on Ikea Hackers. This highly active community of furniture “hackers” creates brand-new designs out of off-the-shelf Ikea furniture. You’ll find cheap and chic plans for everything from lockers to benches.

3. Give Your Mudroom a DIY Makeover

Laura Tarlo of The Unique Nest blog had a great makeover idea for her laundry/mudroom that added plenty of storage and style - all for just $750. Laura’s DIY mudroom makeover includes new stock cabinets above the washer and dryer, along with a simple plywood countertop covered with white birch veneer to lend the appearance of solid oak. The addition of a coat and shoe rack is another great DIY idea for any size mudroom. Check out The Unique Nest for a complete breakdown of Laura’s mudroom update from start to finish.

4. Add a Bench With Space for Your Shoes

The classic mudroom layout includes a nice bench where you can plunk yourself down and slowly untie your shoe laces after a long day. But instead of putting any old bench in your entryway, why not build one with shoe storage space? This rustic bench from Kelly at My Sophia Ryan is a great idea for a small mudroom entryway with a lot of shoes. Using wood pallets, a hammer, nails and a few quick cuts, you can have a spot to both take a load off and take your shoes off.

5. Completely Redo Your Mudroom Layout for a Beautiful, Organized Space

If you’re looking for a more ambitious update to your mudroom, then Emily Fish’s Farmhouse Mudroom Makeover might give you the inspiration you need. After a “little” demolition work, Emily and her husband turned their mudroom into a stylish and highly organized space with custom-built cabinets, wood countertops and a huge amount of storage space for her family’s shoes. Check out the entire process over at Domestic Deadline.
